I’m feeling bad about enjoying my Saturday

No Plan B.

Itโ€™s 7:34 am at the kitchen table. Not the title of a Jack Reacher novel, but printed on the side of a cereal packet. Iโ€™m munching and happily reading.

Plan A is their carbon neutral by 2050 ambitions, something M&S is eager to share as I eat the apricot wheats. Oatly espouse similar on their packaging.

Weโ€™re off to Mercedes Benz world today for a driving experience. You know, hooning around the Brooklands race track. Designed for petrol heads or those looking to buy a luxury car.

We are neither. For us, it was a birthday present. Just an experience to bring a little joy on a Saturday. Now overshadowed by the climate commitment from the cereal box and the social responsibility of the cow milk haters.

We embark on our frivolous day out adding to Plan B, aka the end of the world. Iโ€™m preoccupied by that as we drive there in our petrol car. A Tesla would be no better given the nuclear energy weโ€™d burn charging it.

What should we have done today instead?

Wear clothes made from recycled bags, grow lentils, visit We Buy Any Car and purchase bicycles instead?

Iโ€™m ok with all of that, except we live in Surrey, not North West Idaho with the Amish. Like it or not, society expects certain kind of behaviours from us. We are herd members.

Seriously though, what were we meant to do today? Our roads are clogged with cars, the bus services are non-existent, the train over priced. I care, but what can I do?

The driving instructor was very patient, the track full of excitement. Drifting around the purpose built, water logged corners was particularly memorable.

The company of fellow experience goers very amicable too.

Fancy a coffee? Sure. Mineโ€™s a latte. Thank you. Ahh, that tastes good.

Oh no.

โ€œMade from recycled paper, saving 17,000L of water per tonne of paper and 3 cubic yards of landfillโ€.

Printed on the side of the paper cup in organic ink. The paper cup Iโ€™ll soon be throwing away.

Iโ€™m back to feeling bad about enjoying my Saturday. Contributing to Plan B, no alternatives in sight.
